Treasures of the Tide

Unveiling the Hidden Beauty Beneath the Waves—Explore the Fascinating World of Bivalves, Gastropods, and Other Marine Invertebrates. Discover How Their Exquisite Shells Become Timeless Pieces of Jewelry.

What is a Bivalve?

A bivalve is a mollusk with a shell of two hinged parts, or valves. These creatures, like clams, mussels, and oysters, are in varying tidal zones, burying themselves in the sand. The shells they create are essential for their protection and are naturally beautiful, with unique patterns, textures, and colors.

At Concha Bella, our jewelry begins in the ocean, where marine animals like clams, mussels, and snails create their exquisite shells through biomineralization. These creatures use calcium carbonate, extracted from seawater, to build their shells layer by layer, resulting in strong yet beautifully intricate structures. Each shell tells its own story, shaped by its tidal location, predation, and sands of its ocean home.

Many of the shells we use come from these filter feeders. These remarkable mollusks help maintain the health of marine ecosystems by filtering water and removing particles like plankton and organic matter. Their natural filtration contributes to a cleaner ocean, supporting a balanced environment for all sea life.

When these animals complete their life cycle, their shells are carried by the tides to the shore, where we carefully select them. At Concha Bella, we transform these ocean treasures into luxury jewelry that honors nature's beauty, sustainability, and intricate craftsmanship. Our commitment to ocean education ensures that every piece reflects elegance and a deep respect for the marine world.

What is a gastropod?

Gastropods are diverse mollusks that include snails, whelks, and sea slugs. These fascinating creatures are characterized by their single, spiraled shell and muscular foot, which they use to move along surfaces.

Unlike bivalves, gastropods carry just one shell on their back to protect and house them. Gastropod shells often become homes for hermit crabs who’ve outgrown their past dwellings.

They play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, grazing on algae and helping to maintain balance in their environment. At Concha Bella, we carefully select gastropod shells from the shorelines of the Salish Sea and Puget Sound, turning them into elegant jewelry that celebrates the ocean's natural beauty and biodiversity
